50 Years of Men's Soccer Celebrated

The 50th anniversary of Varsity Men’s Soccer at Saint Anselm College was celebrated in September with nearly five decades of student-athletes marking the milestone.

Over 40 alumni soccer players ranging from the 1969 to 2017 classes started the day with family members at a celebratory brunch in the President’s Dining Room. There, they were issued a challenge: to all men’s and women’s soccer alumni; Jim Van Hoof ’85 announced a grant which would match all gifts and pledges (up to $50,000) designated to the scholarship foundation in the name of long-time soccer coach Ed Cannon, or to either the men’s or women’s soccer fundraising accounts.

Former head coach Cannon and former head coach Peter Ramsey attended the 50th event which included a double-overtime contest vs. Saint Rose.

“What a tremendous turnout of men’s soccer alumni and their families,” said Daron Montgomery, director of Athletics. “There was a true sense of passion for the program, and it was so fitting that Coach Cannon was able to join us for this celebration. He built the foundation for men’s soccer on the Hilltop and had such a meaningful impact on so many Hawks student-athletes.”

The soccer alumni wrapped up their day in the President’s Box at Grappone Stadium as dignitaries for the varsity football game.
