Preparations are underway at Sullivan Arena

With the CNN, WMUR, New Hampshire Union Leader debate now one week away, preparations are well underway for the pending arrival of television crews and politicians. Before CNN's John King and the seven participating candidates can take to the stage, much work remains to be done, with a high school commencement in the midst of the action.

Over the weekend, a crew arrived to build the superstructure that will hold lights, and various pieces of the debate set. The crew worked from 8 a.m. to well after midnight Sunday, clearing the way for the Saint Anselm staff to prepare the arena for a Tuesday evening commencement ceremony of a local high school.

Saint Anselm College is providing venues for the June 13 debate and related activities, but we did not determine who would be invited to appear in the debate. That was a decision reached by the media sponsors, CNN, WMUR, and the New Hampshire Union Leader. They determined that the definition of a candidate was a person who was taking substantive steps towards a presidential run and had reached a minimum threshold in national or state polls.

From CNN.com: As previously announced, CNN will team up with Hearst Television’s WMUR-TV and the New Hampshire Union Leader to host a GOP primary debate in America’s first primary state. The debate featuring Republican candidates will be held at Saint Anselm College on June 13 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Due to the historical nature of presidential debates and the significance of these forums to the American public, CNN believes strongly that the debates should be accessible to all viewers.
